Before the clone projects, The Republic had the Space Marines with heavy tweaking to the body they were bred to be the perfect soldiers. But the rights of passage and harsh experiments the overseers of the project instilled were viewed as too inhumane and were discontinued. The labs were set back up throughout the galaxy in secret and soon the Space Marines were rivaling the Mandalorians when it came to mercenary work, being more of a army for hire than a mercenary company.
